Message from CAH principal Dr. Morris Regarding Social Media Post Incident

Cumberland Academy Family,

The incident on campus yesterday caused confusion and fear with students, parents, and families. The administration worked to ensure the safety of all faculty and students responding to and investigating all reports. The Tyler Police Department investigated the initial concern that a student was threatening the safety of our school.

We appreciate that parents allowed students who had concerns to come home until we were able to investigate all subsequent reports. Students on campus did not panic, they shared information with teachers/administrators, and without question they acted in an orderly manner throughout the day.

I have spoken to the parent and student who made the initial social media posting and they fully support administration actions following the incident. The student understands the impact of his posting. The Tyler Police Department determined it to be an irresponsible social media post rather than a threat and did not issue a citation or arrest the student. The campus classified it as a violation of the student code of conduct resulting in a major instructional interruption.

Although we cannot discuss any consequences, student safety surrounding this incident was considered through the remainder of the academic year. Parents, as well as students, can contact campus administration with any concerns or questions. We would love to hear your thoughts and ways to improve processes on campus.

The safety of our students is Cumberland Academy’s number one priority; all threats against our school will be taken seriously.
